Every year for the past 13 years, liberated cyclists have gathered at Mt Scott Park to join in one of nearly 70 documented Naked Bike Rides that happen all over the globe. Portland's event has grown in numbers from a measly 125 people in 2004, to over 10,000 in 2016. Since nudity is legal in Portland as a form of a protest, and the WNBR was initiated as a protest, the police do their part to help keep the route safe. It's become one of "THE" summer events in Portland.

The roots: The original intent of the Naked Bike Ride was a stand against society's dependency on oil. As the protest grew in popularity, the individual reasons for riding became as unique as the riders themselves. One of the major themes is to raise awareness for the vulnerability of cyclists. Choosing to be nude, reenforces the idea that cyclists, are technically 'naked' and defenselessness against a motorist encased in metal. A more recent focus of the event as shifted to body acceptance and the desexualization of the naked body. Nudity shouldn't be seen as shameful, its a body... we all have one.

Whether your intention is to protest fossil fuels, advocate bike safety or promote body positivity; this event sends an important message to everyone- We need to love the earth, love each other and love ourselves. That... and it's a fun as hell! Let's get naked!

Some of the tallest Douglas Fir trees in Portland are located in Mt Scott Park.
