Arriving in Portugal was a bit like stepping back in time. Not a throwback in time like Cuba, more like a slide back into a more personable, simpler time. The thing that immediately struck me was the understated opulence of Portugal. Although it was mostly worn with age, the sheer volume of architectural artwork was breathtaking. One of most impressive, was the incredible tile work. It was everywhere, on the sidewalks, on the government buildings, even regular homes, most surfaces exuded some kind of master craftsmanship. Stunning black and white mosaics and beautifully painted tiles filled the streets. Lisbon was definitely one of my favorite European cities, such a rich sense of history and a seemingly wonderful lack of technology.

Typical Lisbon street scene.

Gorgeous mosaic facade.

Almost every street in the Lisbon was lined with stone mosaics Calçada Portuguesa, or “Portuguese Pavement”.

Stunning Azulejo mural.

Jet lag and pastel de nata! I ate like 2 of these every day... delicious!

Pastries everywhere!

The people in Portugal just so lovely!

I loved these little girls! They were so excited to have their picture taken.

Badass

The whole of Lisbon is build on 5 hills, creating several viewpoints exposing the stunning red tiled roofs. All the city streets remain cobblestone and are filled with shops, bars, restaurants and homes.

Stunning skylines

The Massive Jerónimos Monastery.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos- Monument to Discoveries

Like most of Western Europe, Portugal is rich in Catholic heritage. The most expensive chapel in the world lies in Lisbon.
